iMazing: what the trial allows
iMazing’s own FAQ on trial limits, including the Messages item cap.
Unbubble is a free, open-source iPhone message exporter. Plug an iPhone into a Windows PC and save every iMessage and text conversation, with photos, reactions, replies and edits, as an offline HTML archive, a PDF per conversation, CSV or JSON. No full backup, no account and no telemetry. An Unbubble iPhone app for iOS 27 exports a conversation to PDF or CSV with no computer at all.

Use Unbubble, a free and open-source exporter. On a Windows 10 or 11 PC, install Unbubble, plug in your unlocked iPhone and choose the conversations to save. Unbubble copies only Messages and Contacts off the phone, rebuilds each thread with its dates, senders, photos, reactions and edits, and saves it as a PDF per conversation, CSV, JSON or a browsable offline HTML archive. It needs no full backup, no account and no paid licence, and nothing is uploaded unless you choose to.
Compare before you pay
Most guides to exporting iPhone texts end at a paid desktop app. These are the routes people actually use, compared on what they cost and what they keep. Competitor details come from each vendor’s own page, checked on 1 November 2026; confirm current terms before you buy anything.

On a Windows PC
Windows can only talk to an iPhone through Apple’s own mobile device driver. Unbubble installs that driver for you, then streams the Messages database off the phone and throws away everything else as it arrives.
The installer is not yet code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may show “Windows protected your PC” the first time. Choose More info, confirm the file came from the official GitHub release, then Run anyway. Each release publishes SHA256.txt so you can verify the download.
On an iPhone, with no computer
Yes, on iOS 27 or later. Apple does not let apps read Messages, but it does let a Shortcut you approve. The Unbubble iPhone app pairs with the Unbubble Export shortcut: the shortcut reads Messages in date order, the app keeps only the conversation you picked, and everything else is dropped as it arrives. Nothing leaves the phone. The iPhone app has been submitted to the App Store; its source and privacy policy are already public on GitHub.
An export is only useful if it matches what you saw on the phone. Unbubble rebuilds each thread from the Messages database rather than from screenshots, so it keeps details that a print-to-PDF or a copy-paste loses.
Pick the file for the job
Every format comes from the same rebuilt conversation, so you can save more than one.
Unbubble gives you a complete, dated record you control: every message with its sender and timestamp, and on iPhone a PDF that carries a SHA-256 fingerprint of its contents so later changes can be detected. Unbubble does not certify a record or decide whether it is admissible. Rules differ by court and jurisdiction, so ask your attorney or the court what format and authentication they require before you rely on any export.
No cable, no backup
Yes. Screen-record a thread in Messages while you scroll back through it, then drop the video into Unbubble on your PC or pick it from the iPhone’s camera roll. Unbubble reads every message, who sent it and the time header above it with on-device OCR, and saves it like any other export. Times come from Messages’ own headers, so messages under one header share its time and anything above the first header is undated. Tapbacks are not captured, and photos and emoji become markers such as [Photo] and [Emoji].
Unbubble is built so that your messages stay with you unless you decide otherwise.
After the export
Once a whole conversation is on your computer, you can read it as a timeline instead of a memory. If you want a second reading, Unbubble can send one conversation to Grey Mirror, which measures the history you supply: who reaches out first, how reply timing changed, and what followed each argument. That step is optional; the export is yours either way.
These limits come from iOS and from how the phone stores messages.
Install Unbubble on a Windows 10 or 11 PC, connect your iPhone, and choose PDF. Unbubble saves one PDF per conversation, with dates, senders and photos. It is free with no message limit. On iOS 27 or later, the Unbubble iPhone app can also save a conversation as a PDF with no computer.
Use Unbubble. It installs Apple’s iPhone driver for you, streams only Messages and Contacts off the phone over a cable, and saves every conversation as HTML, PDF, CSV or JSON in your Documents folder. You do not need iTunes or a full backup.
Yes. Unbubble is free and open source with no message limit. iMazing’s trial caps Messages at 25 items and needs a paid licence for more, according to its own FAQ checked on 1 November 2026. Unbubble covers message export only; it does not manage apps, photos or backups.
Yes. Unbubble’s CSV export has one row per message with the timestamp, sender and text, and it opens in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets. On iPhone, the CSV also records direction, type and attachment paths, and formula-like cells are escaped.
No. iOS only releases the Messages database through its backup service, so Unbubble drives that service itself and keeps only Messages and Contacts as the bytes arrive. Photos, apps and everything else are discarded on the fly, so there is no backup folder and no need for 100 GB of free space.
Yes, on iOS 27 or later. The Unbubble iPhone app works with the Unbubble Export shortcut to save one conversation as a PDF, a CSV, or a zip of the CSV with its photos and files. Nothing leaves the phone. The iPhone app has been submitted to the App Store.
The Windows app keeps group names and member changes, tapbacks and emoji reactions, inline replies, edit history, unsent messages, message effects and photos. Attachments iOS offloaded to iCloud are listed but cannot be exported because they are not on the phone.
Unbubble has no account, analytics or telemetry, and its full source code is public on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 and MIT licences. The Windows installer is not yet code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn on first run; each release publishes SHA-256 checksums so you can verify the file.
Unbubble produces a complete, dated record, and the iPhone PDF carries a SHA-256 fingerprint of its contents. It does not certify a record or decide admissibility. Ask your attorney or the court what format and authentication they require.
The exporter is for Windows PCs and iPhone. On a Mac, the Grey Mirror Mac app reads Messages already on the machine, and the Messages app can print a conversation to PDF.
Unbubble is a free, standalone exporter from the same developer as Grey Mirror. It works on its own. Uploading a conversation to Grey Mirror for relationship analysis is an optional step that only happens when you choose it.

Unbubble keeps Messages and Contacts as they come off the iPhone and discards the rest, so no full backup is needed.
Save each conversation as PDF, CSV, JSON or an offline HTML archive on your own computer or phone.
Nothing leaves your device unless you choose to send one conversation to Grey Mirror for analysis.
An export can only hold what the iPhone still stores. Attachments offloaded to iCloud are listed but cannot be exported.
