How to export an iMessage conversation

On a Mac, open the conversation in Messages and use Print to save a PDF. For an iPhone history with structured dates and senders, use a computer-based export tool such as iMazing to save CSV or text. The iPhone Messages app does not offer a whole-chat Export button.

How to save an iMessage conversation on a Mac

This uses the Messages app already on your Mac. It creates a readable PDF; it does not guarantee that every old message has downloaded or that each bubble carries a precise timestamp.

  1. Open Messages on your Mac and select the conversation you want to save. If the thread is missing, check that Messages uses the same Apple Account as your iPhone.
  2. Find the oldest exchange you want to include. Allow older messages to load and check that both people’s replies are present.
  3. Choose File > Print, or press Command-P. Inspect the print preview before saving.
  4. Open the PDF menu in the print dialog and choose Save as PDF. Save the file somewhere you can find again.
  5. Open the saved PDF. Check its first and last pages, sender labels and dates. If timing or older messages are missing, use a structured export instead. Then upload the file and confirm the recovered details.

How to export iPhone messages with a computer

iMazing is one third-party option on Mac or Windows, with its own licence terms. Review its current export limits before buying. A phone backup is an input for that tool; upload the conversation file it produces, not your whole backup.

  1. Connect your unlocked iPhone to your computer and open iMazing. Approve the connection on the phone if asked.
  2. Select your device, then Messages. Follow the tool’s prompts to load the device data or a backup you control.
  3. Choose the intended conversation and check the available history. Clear date or search filters if you want the full available thread.
  4. Use Export and choose CSV or text. Keep the sender and date fields; for CSV, keep the header row. Save the conversation file.
  5. Open that file and check both senders and the oldest and newest dates. Upload it to Grey Mirror, then confirm the participants and recovered message count.

Which file should you use?

For reply timing and changes across months, a structured export is usually easier to check. A PDF is useful when it contains the information you need; its appearance alone cannot tell you how much history it includes.

If the export is shorter than the conversation

Check the original conversation on the device that holds the older messages. Syncing, backup dates and export filters can each change what is available. Do not assume that a successful save means a complete history.

Keep your original export unchanged. If Grey Mirror asks you to identify senders, use the labels in the file. If those labels or timestamps are missing, re-export with those fields enabled rather than typing guessed information into the conversation.

Upload your iMessage conversation

Choose your saved PDF, CSV or text file, then check the dates and sender identities Grey Mirror recovers. If you exported an older backup, pay particular attention to its end date. The initial analysis is completely free, with no card required. Read your preview before deciding whether to unlock the full report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I export a whole iMessage chat directly from my iPhone?

Messages on iPhone has no whole-chat Export button. Use your Mac’s Messages print route or a computer-based tool that exports your own device or backup to a conversation file.

Do I have to turn off backup encryption?

No. Do not disable encryption just to follow this guide. Use an export tool that supports your backup and unlock it locally with your own password when required. Grey Mirror needs the exported conversation, not the backup password.

Will a Mac PDF include my entire conversation?

Check the saved file. Older messages may not have loaded, and the print layout may not include a precise time on every message. If you need those details, choose a structured export and verify its date range.

Can I analyze the exported conversation for free?

Yes. Grey Mirror’s initial analysis is completely free, with no card required. The full report is optional after the preview.

Use this guide on the question you came with

A PDF can look complete while omitting old messages or individual times. If those details matter to your question, use a structured export and check it again.
