Yes. Grey Mirror analyzes your entire exported Instagram DM history for initiation, reply timing, affection, conflict and repair. Upload the Meta messages ZIP, or all message files for one conversation in JSON or HTML. Confirm the conversation and participants before analysis. Preview your real relationship story free; the complete report with the full timeline, Deep AI Analysis, Memory Lane, charts, metrics, evidence, and available analyzer results costs $17.99 once. Missing messages and off-app context can affect the findings.
Choose your starting point
Start with the material you actually have. A short exchange and a complete history answer different questions.
Upload the ZIP or every JSON/HTML part of one conversation. Confirm the participants, then analyze the supplied history free. No card required; full report unlocks are optional.
Quick Scan a short exchange now, without an account or payment. The scan interface opens in English. Paste one message per line with consistent sender labels. It measures visible wording and contributions; it does not produce the full-history report or infer private intentions.
Quick Scan accepts copied text, up to 20,000 characters and 250 lines. Screenshot scanning is not available there. For a full-history report, use the Meta ZIP or actual message files; start_here.html and index.html do not contain the conversation.
Get your thread out of Instagram
Request your messages through Meta Accounts Center. Choose the widest available date range and JSON when available. Grey Mirror also reads the message pages in HTML exports. Keep the downloaded ZIP intact, or upload every message file belonging to the conversation.
A download index is a list of links, not the conversation. The message files contain the text, participants and timestamps that analysis needs.
Fix an unreadable export
Match the problem to the file before uploading again. Renaming a text copy to .json or .html does not restore the original message structure.
A failed import is not a relationship finding. If the original export still fails, contact support with the file type and the error shown. Keep private messages out of a public support post.
Choose the full ZIP or all JSON/HTML message parts, confirm the conversation and participants, then start your free analysis. No card required.
Use the platform-specific guide when the conversation moved to WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram or SMS.
What you get
The useful answers are comparisons across the whole thread, not verdicts about one message. These are the questions a full DM history can actually support.
Compare who starts conversations, asks questions back and leaves questions unanswered. Those are visible patterns. They cannot prove how someone feels.
Follow a warm reply through the next exchange: is a question answered, a plan made or contact resumed? Compare several sequences and note calls or meetings the export cannot show.
Compare similar weekdays, known schedule changes and whether they reconnect when available. Slower replies with thoughtful follow-up differ from repeated unanswered questions; neither proves a private motive.
Check conversation starts, questions answered and attempts to reconnect. Group consecutive bubbles into turns before comparing effort, and include contributions made outside DMs.
Intermittent re-entry has a shape: long gaps, low-effort openers, no follow-through on plans. That shape is visible across a full history.
Read the specific wording and what happens after a boundary is stated. Recurrence can clarify a pattern, but a single threat still deserves attention; a score cannot determine whether you are safe.
DMs often include reactions, media, story replies, short acknowledgments, and platform-specific context. Those elements can matter, but text metrics should not pretend to know missing media meaning.
If enough text and timestamps remain, Grey Mirror can still measure timing drift, unanswered bids, effort imbalance, repair attempts, future planning, and communication shifts.
Incomplete DMs can make a relationship seem colder or warmer than it was. Deleted messages, off-platform conversations, and story context can all reduce confidence.
Reactions, reels, photos, and story replies can carry real meaning. A text-first report keeps the visible text, marks the missing context, and lets confidence reflect that gap.
DMs are useful when the question is about repeated behavior: pursuit and withdrawal, ignored bids, warm re-entry, pressure, future-planning avoidance, or whether a short reply pattern changed after conflict.
What you actually get
Preview your own relationship story before any payment, so you can see the real format on your own thread rather than a demo. The complete report connects each supported finding to the messages behind it and states how confident the reading is.
Escalation rate, repair rate, apology attempts, volatility, and the pursue-withdraw balance between the two of you, measured across every message rather than a sample.
A specific point where reply timing, message length, or warmth measurably shifted, plus which of those moved first.
Every finding links back to the stretch of DMs it came from, with the real messages shown, so you can check the reasoning instead of trusting it.
Where reactions, disappearing messages, or a conversation that moved to another app leave gaps, the report names the gap rather than filling it.
It is built for the questions that only become answerable once months of DMs are read in sequence, and it is deliberately unhelpful for the ones that are not.
Preview your real relationship story from your own export, not a sample thread. The complete timeline, cinematic narrative, Memory Lane, custom charts, metrics, evidence, and available analyzer results are $17.99 once, with an optional Grey Mirror Plus monthly plan. Most Instagram exports finish analysis in a few minutes; a very long history takes longer because the whole thread is read rather than sampled.
A DM export contains the other person’s messages as well as yours, which is why the privacy handling matters more here than for most uploads.
Screenshot tools read the moments you chose to save, which is the least representative sample of a conversation and the one most shaped by how you already feel about it. A full DM export removes that selection step: the quiet weeks and the ordinary exchanges are included, which is what makes a timing or effort pattern measurable at all.
Yes. Quick Scan reads a pasted short exchange without an account or payment. Use consistent sender labels, up to 20,000 characters and 250 lines. It reports visible wording and contributions, not a relationship diagnosis or a full-history report. When Meta delivers your export, upload the ZIP or every message file for one conversation to analyze the supplied history free, with no card required. Full report unlocks are optional.
Yes. Select all numbered JSON or HTML message files for the same conversation in one upload. Keep every part so the supplied timeline includes the quiet weeks as well as the memorable exchanges. If a ZIP includes several conversations, choose the intended thread before analysis.
Check whether you uploaded only start_here.html or index.html. Those pages link to your files but do not contain the conversation. Upload the original Meta ZIP or the message_1.json or message_1.html files and their numbered parts. If the selected date range contains no messages, request a wider range.
A browser-saved TXT copy can merge sender names, message bodies and dates. An account handle in the header may also differ from the sender display name. Grey Mirror stops when it cannot separate those labels reliably. Upload the original Meta ZIP or all numbered JSON/HTML message files instead; do not guess labels or change the file extension. If that original still fails, contact support with the error shown.
Both names describe the same thing, and Grey Mirror covers it either way. Instagram calls the feature Direct Messages, so an Instagram chat analyzer, an Instagram DM analyzer, an Instagram conversation analyzer and an Instagram message analyzer all mean one job: reading the thread between two people and measuring how it actually moved. Grey Mirror reads the whole exported history, including the ordinary days between the memorable ones.
Yes — preview your real relationship story before any payment, with monthly plan optional. Upload the Instagram export, confirm which participant is you, and see who initiates, how reply timing splits, and where tone moved. The one-time $17.99 unlock opens the complete timeline, Memory Lane, custom charts, metrics, evidence links, and available analyzer results, saved to your account.
Use Meta Accounts Center to request a messages export to your device. Choose JSON and the widest available date range. Upload the downloaded ZIP, or every message file for the same conversation, then confirm the participants. HTML message pages are also supported; an index page alone is not a message export.
It can measure the observable side of it: who starts conversations, who asks questions back, how quickly each person replies, and whether warmth is returned or left hanging. That is a much better basis than one screenshot, but it is evidence about behaviour in the thread, not proof of how someone feels.
Screenshots can support a lightweight view, but full-thread analysis needs a real export or structured history. Screenshot tools are limited to whichever moments you chose to save, which is exactly the selection bias a pattern question needs to avoid.
The download is your own data from Meta. Read the privacy and deletion pages for retention and deletion specifics before uploading, and remember a DM export contains the other person’s messages too.
Yes. Story and media context can be important, and missing context should reduce confidence.
Reaction meaning depends on thread context, so Grey Mirror treats reactions as supporting context rather than standalone proof. A heart can be warmth, politeness, irony, or habit.
The download generally covers the full history available on the account, which is what makes it more useful than a screenshot. Very old threads, deleted messages, and disappearing messages may be missing, and the report marks confidence accordingly.
Only for what is inside the export. If the relationship moved to calls, iMessage, or in person, those gaps are invisible to a DM-only analysis, and the report should say so rather than read silence as withdrawal.
Yes. The JSON export from Instagram’s data download is the expected input. Upload the messages folder or the ZIP, confirm which participant is you, and the full supplied thread is analyzed without sampling messages away.
Your free preview runs on your own export, not a demo thread, so you can see your real relationship story before deciding whether the complete timeline, Memory Lane, charts, metrics, evidence, and available analyzer results are worth $17.99.
It measures the observable side: who opens conversations, who asks questions back, reply speed on each side, and whether warmth gets returned or left hanging. That is evidence about behaviour in the thread. It cannot tell you how someone feels, and it does not pretend to.
As far back as your export does. Instagram’s data download generally covers the full history on the account, which is what makes timing drift and effort imbalance measurable over months instead of days.
Yes. Meta offers the download as HTML or JSON, and Grey Mirror reads both. If the HTML download holds several conversations, you choose which one to analyze, and dates written in other languages are read correctly. JSON is the smaller file, so choose it if you have not requested the download yet.
Yes. Grey Mirror runs in the browser on any phone or computer, and The Grey Mirror: Chat Analysis is a free iPhone app on the App Store. Start wherever your Instagram download is saved.
Yes. Grey Mirror counts each person’s messages, shows who starts conversations and compares how quickly each of you replies across the whole history, not only recent weeks. The free preview shows the headline patterns; the complete report adds the timeline, charts and the dated messages behind each finding.
