Grey Mirror analyzes the sender labels, send timestamps, message text, attachment placeholders, and system markers that are actually present in a WhatsApp export.
Standard WhatsApp exports do not include read-receipt or delivery-event timestamps. Grey Mirror measures only the timing and structure preserved in the exported file.

Understand the methodology behind WhatsApp message analysis.
Exporting the intended one-to-one WhatsApp conversation is the first step. Menu labels and sharing options can vary by app version and device, so confirm the exported file opens normally and inspect its beginning and end before upload.
On iOS: Open the WhatsApp chat you want to analyze. Tap the contact or group name at the top. Scroll down and tap “Export Chat.” Choose “Without Media” to keep the export focused on text and attachment placeholders. Select how you want to share the file, then transfer it to the device where you will access Grey Mirror.
On Android: Open the WhatsApp chat. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right. Select More, then Export Chat, and choose Without Media. Save the text or archive through the available sharing options. Timestamp formats vary by locale and app version; check the dates shown after import.
WhatsApp can limit how much history is included in an export, especially when media is included. Review the beginning and end of the exported file before upload. If the export appears incomplete, Grey Mirror should report the available date range rather than imply that missing history was analyzed.
Save the original export before opening it in another editor. Sending the file to yourself is a transfer step; use a method you trust for private messages. A pasted excerpt, a WhatsApp backup and a TXT conversation export are different inputs. Changing a filename extension does not convert one into another.
Match the next step to the problem you can actually see. Preserve the original export and avoid repeatedly uploading the same incomplete file. If the import gives a specific diagnostic, include that code when contacting support rather than sending private message text.
A WhatsApp text export usually contains sender names or phone numbers, send timestamps and message text. Date order, timestamp precision and system-line wording vary by locale and app version. Read the fields that are actually present instead of treating every line as a normal authored message.
WhatsApp send timestamps can support response-gap and timing-drift calculations at the precision preserved by the export. Grey Mirror should show the source coverage and avoid implying that send time is the same as read time.
Standard exports can contain system lines for calls or group changes, but they do not expose WhatsApp’s blue-check read events or delivery history. Those missing events remain an explicit limitation.
Without-media exports can retain placeholders for photos, videos, documents, and voice messages. Grey Mirror can count those placeholders when they are present, but it does not inspect omitted media or infer emotional withdrawal from a media-count change alone.
WhatsApp and iMessage exports can both preserve analyzable text, sender order, and timestamps, but the exact fields depend on the platform, device, app version, and export method. Grey Mirror should report what the uploaded file actually contains instead of assigning a blanket quality ranking to either platform.
A standard WhatsApp export commonly includes sender labels, send timestamps, message text, and placeholders for some system or media events. It does not provide a complete read-receipt, delivery, typing-status, or online-history log. A placeholder can establish that an event occurred without revealing the content of a call, image, or voice note.
iMessage extraction methods vary more widely. Some preserve reactions or edit markers and others do not. Those fields should affect analysis only when they are present and parsed reliably; their absence is a coverage limit, not evidence about the relationship.
The choice between platforms is usually dictated by where the conversation occurred. Separate exports preserve platform-specific timestamps and system markers and avoid blending different communication contexts into one unsupported aggregate.
When messages span multiple platforms, analyze only the formats the current upload flow accepts and interpret each report within the coverage shown. The public guide does not promise an undocumented cross-platform comparison feature.
A WhatsApp export is transmitted to JustLayMe over HTTPS and stored outside public static paths while the account-scoped job runs. The application preserves enough state to support participant mapping, retries, report delivery, and account-authorized access.
Reports, processed messages, and stored original uploads have no automatic expiry; they stay until you delete the report or your account. Temporary chunk-transfer pieces clear within 24 hours and temporary export-download files within 30 minutes. Deletion covers active systems, not every backup block at the same instant.
Core parsing and analysis run on privately operated infrastructure. When a public prose model endpoint is configured, it receives derived report facts by default instead of the complete raw transcript. The verified processor table explains the purpose and data boundary for edge delivery, payments, email, authentication, analytics, and prose generation.
Authenticated users can request export or deletion. Deletion removes active application records and known artifacts within application-controlled paths, clears derived feature rows, and produces a signed receipt. Mandatory billing, fraud, security, legal, and backup records can have different lifecycles.
Export as “Without Media” in the default text or archive format offered by WhatsApp. This keeps the upload focused on message text, send timestamps, sender labels, and any attachment placeholders the export preserves. Review the accepted-file list in the current upload flow before sending it.
Grey Mirror is designed around a two-participant relationship thread. A multi-participant WhatsApp export may preserve sender labels, but the public product does not promise pairwise group-chat scoring or a unified group-dynamics report. Use a one-on-one export for the clearest supported analysis.
Yes. A deleted message that is absent from the export cannot be analyzed. A gap in the timeline is not proof that a message was deleted, so Grey Mirror should be read as an analysis of the supplied export rather than a reconstruction of missing content.
WhatsApp exports may preserve a placeholder for a voice message, but they do not include a transcript of the audio. Grey Mirror can only analyze text that is present in the export; it does not infer what was said in a voice note.
Grey Mirror receives a WhatsApp export over HTTPS and processes it in an account-scoped server job. The upload is not served from a public static path. Your report, processed messages and stored original upload stay until you delete them. Temporary transfer and download files have separate cleanup windows, and authenticated deletion removes active records and known artifacts. Read the current processor and backup limits on the Trust page before uploading.
Grey Mirror can ingest Unicode text, and structural measures such as timestamps, sender order, and message counts are less language-dependent than tone or topic interpretation. The site does not claim equal validation across languages. Treat language-based findings cautiously when the thread is not primarily English.
Grey Mirror cannot analyze the content of a WhatsApp voice or video call because that content is not present in a chat export. A call placeholder may remain in the text file, but it should be treated as a boundary in the record, not as evidence about what happened during the call.
If messages from a blocked contact remain in the export, Grey Mirror can analyze the text that is present. The record cannot prove why communication ended; a block, deletion, platform change, and natural ending can all look like an abrupt stop in the timeline.
The exact fields vary by device, app version, locale, and export format. A typical export includes message text, timestamps, sender labels, and placeholders for some attachments or system events. It does not provide a complete record of read receipts, typing status, online history, or off-platform context. Grey Mirror can only use fields that are actually present in the uploaded file.
Grey Mirror can only analyze messages that appear in the export you upload. If older messages were restored onto the current device and are present in that export, they can be included. Grey Mirror cannot recover messages that WhatsApp did not export, and the public product does not promise automatic merging of separate phone exports.
WhatsApp end-to-end encryption protects messages while they move between WhatsApp participants. An export has already been decrypted on the user’s device, so uploading it to Grey Mirror creates a separate processing event governed by JustLayMe’s HTTPS transport, access controls, retention windows, processors, and deletion policy. WhatsApp encryption does not carry over to the exported file.
Check the WhatsApp export coverage, participant map, timestamps, and cited message windows first. Calls, disappearing messages, deleted content, media, and in-person events may explain a mismatch. A report finding should be revised or given less weight when the available evidence does not fit the context you know.
Grey Mirror addresses creator bias through inspectable rules, explicit pattern definitions, confidence scoring, evidence windows, and narrative prompts that present findings as measurements rather than judgments. The word lists used for warmth classification reflect documented affectionate-language patterns and may vary across cultures or communication styles, so the system tells you what it measured and how. You decide whether those measurements are meaningful in your context.
A WhatsApp export can make repeated timing changes, initiation imbalance, unreturned questions, post-conflict gaps, and one-sided repair easier to count. Those measurements describe the uploaded record; they do not reveal the contents of calls or voice notes and do not prove private intent.
The same observable metrics can be calculated for a two-person friendship thread, but their meaning depends on that friendship. Grey Mirror does not publish a universal romantic or friendship baseline. Read timing, warmth, and repair patterns against the thread’s own history and the relationship context you know outside the messages.
A disappearing message that is already gone and absent from the export cannot be analyzed. Grey Mirror will analyze only the record that remains, so findings may not represent the full conversation when disappearing messages were used heavily.

Open the intended two-person chat, export Without Media and inspect the saved conversation text.
A late start, unreadable file, unexpected sender or wrong date needs its own check in the troubleshooting table.
Upload the supported TXT or ZIP, confirm YOU and THEM, and compare the reported dates before interpreting findings.
A backup, media placeholder or archive index is not the conversation text. Completely free analysis requires no card; missing exported history remains missing context.
